Reality Bomb Episode 095

December 23, 2021

On the ninety-fifth edition of Reality Bomb, we’re talking about all things Flux: the uber-serialized nature of it, the characters, how the Doctor’s new backstory works in it… all the things. It’s a deep dive into the special serial that made up Series 13 with Kayti Burt, Evan Teng and KatyBeth Schmid. We also talk with author Paul Hayes about his new book The Long Game: the Inside Story of How the BBC Brought Back Doctor Who and the obstacles the show faced in coming back to TV in the late ’90s including a Doctor Who film in development hell, confusion about the rights to the series and indifference within BBC culture to science fiction. And writer and renaissance man Graham Kibble-White emerges from a maze that looks like a 1980s hotel to bring The God Complex to the Gallery of the Underrated. Plus Priya Deonarain offers an editorial on what she thought about Flux when all was said and done. All this plus an experiment to give people Flux in its purest form!

Reality Bomb Episode 093A – Remembering Petra Mayer

November 19, 2021

NPR Books Editor Petra Mayer, who has been a longtime contributor to Reality Bomb, died suddenly on November 13. In this special episode Graeme Burk is joined by the Verity! podcast’s Deb Stanish to remember Petra and the special enthusiasm she had for Doctor Who.

We revisit the highlights of Petra’s 26 appearances on the program, and represent four complete segments including Petra’s first time on the program including:

  • Petra’s first appearance on Reality Bomb, doing a Gallery of the Underrated on the Sylvester McCoy story The Happiness Patrol way back in episode 013 (July 2014)
  • Petra’s stinging critique of the lack of women writers in Doctor Who from episode 018 (December 2014)
  • Petra and Deb Stanish at our second New York City live show talking about the enduring power of regeneration in Doctor Who back in episode 038 (September 2016)
  • “When Bad Retcons Happen to Good People”, Petra’s contribution to our “Variations on a Timeless Child” episode (083) on a retcon that did not please her (to put it mildly) from September 2020

Petra Mayer will be missed by Doctor Who fans everywhere.

Deeper Cuts Special: Doctor Who – The Music II

September 10, 2021

Never fear, Reality Bomb listeners. There’s nothing wrong with your podcast! The gang from Deeper Cuts — Shannon Dohar, Rob Jones and Reality Bomb’s very own Graeme Burk — have been timescooped over to Reality Bomb’s feed (in honour of the Deeper Cuts miniseries, The Soundtrack Sessions, available now!) to do their thing with us– talking about an album that was of significance to one of them. Because it’s Reality Bomb, they’re talking about a Doctor Who soundtrack: 1984’s Doctor Who – The Music II, which Graeme bought as 17 year-old as it was the sequel to an album he coveted from PBS pledge breaks. But how does this BBC Radiophonic Workshop collection with its heavy synths hold up in the modern era? And what are the basic elements that all Doctor Who music — of any era — shares? Get behind the sofa, good people, as the Deeper Cuts trio get all timey-wimey!

You can find out more about Deeper Cuts at their website, or look them up wherever you get your podcasts. You can talk to them on twitter at @deepercutscast
